How To Start Streaming?
Beginner’s Guide to Starting Your Live Streaming Setup
So, you're ready to start live streaming, or maybe you're just beginning to explore what’s involved. Either way, welcome! Getting started can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to choosing the right gear. That’s why we’ve created this guide, to help newcomers understand what they need and how to make smart equipment choices from the start.
At the Streaming Store, we believe an educated customer is a happy customer. People who understand their goals and equipment needs are far more likely to make the right purchase, avoid costly returns, and come back for future upgrades. Whether you’re new to streaming or have a bit of experience, we’re here to support every step of the way.
Understanding Your Streaming Level
There are generally three types of streaming users: novice, intermediate, and advanced. This guide is aimed at beginners and intermediate users looking to build or improve their setup.
Step 1: Start With a Workflow Plan
Before spending money, grab a pen and paper. Write down:
- What are you trying to achieve?
- What gear do you already have?
- What’s your budget?
Start small and scale as needed. For example, if you already own cameras, you might just need a mixer and encoder. Keep things simple until you're confident in what you're doing.
Step 2: Choose Your Gear Type
There are three general types of streaming setups:
- Internal Solutions: Capture cards and streaming software installed on a capable computer. Cost-effective, but requires technical setup and maintenance.
- External Solutions: Standalone encoders and mixers that simplify operation—ideal for schools, governments, houses of worship, or anyone working with non-technical staff.
- Turnkey Systems: All-in-one, portable solutions that include everything you need to capture, mix, record, and stream. These are fast to deploy and hassle-free, but require a larger budget.
Step 3: Decide on Camera Needs
How many cameras will you use?
- One camera may be all you need for simple setups (e.g., presenter + slides).
- Multiple cameras offer flexibility for dynamic shoots (e.g., speaker, audience, wide shot).
- PTZ cameras are perfect for solo operators who want remote control.
Cabling tip: HDMI is limited to about 24 feet, while SDI can go hundreds of feet. Your distance and setup will determine which type of camera and cabling you choose.
Step 4: Choose a Mixer
- Software Mixers: Apps like Wirecast or vMix run on your desktop and let you switch between sources digitally.
- Hardware Mixers: Roland and Blackmagic offer reliable A/V switchers with tactile controls and pro-level features.
Step 5: Add a Monitor
You’ll need a display to preview your inputs and final output. Any HDMI screen will do, or you can opt for rack-mounted monitors from brands like iKan or Blackmagic.
Step 6: Select an Encoder
- Software Encoders: Free tools like OBS or built-in platforms work well on a capable PC or Mac.
- Hardware Encoders: Compact devices like Teradek, Matrox, Osprey, or AJA’s Helo offer stable, high-quality output with simple controls. Many models also support proxy recording to SD cards or network storage.
Step 7: Plan for Recording
Need high-quality backup recordings? Use dedicated recorders like the Blackmagic Video Assist or HyperDeck for capturing broadcast-quality files (MOV, MP4, or ProRes).
Step 8: Choose a Streaming Platform
Once your production is ready, you need a platform to distribute it online. Here’s a quick breakdown:
- Simple and Affordable Platforms:
Great for new streamers or small businesses. Examples: Dacast, Castr, Restream.
These platforms offer basic features like multi-platform distribution, basic analytics, and embed options.
- Mid-Tier & Professional Tools:
For organizations that need branding, password protection, or light integrations.
Examples: Vimeo Livestream, StreamShark, Wowza.
- Enterprise-Grade Platforms:
For high-traffic events, marketing automation, internal communications, or global distribution. Examples: Brightcove, Kaltura, Vimeo Enterprise.
These platforms offer robust analytics, API access, SSO, DRM, monetization tools, and advanced security.
Choosing the right platform depends on your audience size, feature needs, and budget. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to help you compare options.
Try Before You Buy
Not sure if a product is right for you? We offer short-term rentals on select gear so you can test equipment in your own environment. Whether you’re validating compatibility, performance, or comfort with a particular device, our “Try Before You Buy” option helps you make a confident decision. Buy the new gear from The Streaming Store or any other reseller. It's a practical way to avoid costly mistakes, and ensure the gear fits your workflow.
Accessories for the Future
Once your base setup is working, consider expanding with:
- Video routers to manage more sources.
- Wireless video transmitters for camera mobility.
- Comms systems for coordinating your team.
These extras aren’t required to get started, but they’ll help scale your productions as your needs grow.
